A Call to Action: Support Peanut’s Law to Protect Our Animals
On October 30th, we experienced a heartbreaking loss that no sanctuary should ever have to endure. Our beloved Peanut the squirrel and Fred the raccoon were tragically euthanized by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), despite their safe and loving home at P’nuts Freedom Farm Animal Sanctuary. This devastating decision was made without any consultation with us, the sanctuary that had provided them care, and before we were even notified, the media had been informed. This loss has left us grief-stricken, but it has also strengthened our resolve to fight for every animal’s right to compassionate care and humane treatment.
What Happened to Peanut and Fred?
At P’nuts Freedom Farm, we’ve dedicated ourselves to rescuing and rehabilitating wildlife in need. From injured squirrels to raccoons and other wildlife, we’ve offered a sanctuary where animals can heal and thrive. Peanut and Fred were two of the many animals we rescued, and their story was supposed to be one of second chances. But on that tragic day, their lives were taken by a decision made by the DEC, with no regard for their well-being or the sanctuary that had given them safety.
This heartbreaking incident has brought to light the flaws in how wildlife is managed by state agencies. We can no longer stand idly by while animals in sanctuaries are subjected to arbitrary decisions that put their lives at risk. That’s why we are pushing for Peanut’s Law.
What Is Peanut’s Law?
Peanut’s Law is a proposed bill that seeks to change how wildlife is managed in New York State. It is designed to ensure that wildlife agencies, like the DEC, are held to the highest standards of humane treatment. The bill would enforce:
-
Compassionate Wildlife Management: Wildlife agencies would be required to follow ethical, humane practices in every aspect of wildlife care, ensuring that animals are treated with dignity and respect.
-
Transparency and Accountability: The law would mandate the use of body cameras and require agencies to provide full transparency when making life-altering decisions about animals under their care. This would help prevent arbitrary and opaque decisions that could harm animals.
-
Protection for Animal Sanctuaries: Sanctuaries like ours, which provide loving homes for wildlife, would be protected from unjust actions and penalties for offering safe havens to animals in need.
Why Is This Important?
Peanut and Fred’s tragic end has shown us the urgent need for change. It is not enough to simply care for animals in sanctuaries; we must ensure that agencies like the DEC are held accountable for their actions and that no animal faces unnecessary suffering.
Peanut’s Law is not just about one animal—it’s about protecting all wildlife and the families and sanctuaries that care for them. It’s about making sure that no animal is treated unfairly, and that every animal has a chance to live in safety and peace.
